Visualizing Security Metrics
CISOs Need Better Dashboards, Says Tenable's Millard"Show me your dashboard." That's a request security expert Gavin Millard regularly makes to CISOs to demonstrate how today's too-complex dashboards highlight the challenge of gathering and distilling essential security metrics.
"Technologists really struggle to communicate their value," says Millard, who's the Europe, Middle East and Africa technical director for Tenable Network Security. In part, that's because they have poor tools for creating reports or dashboards. But it's often also due to CISOs not tracking or sharing the right metrics with their business counterparts.
In an interview at Infosecurity Europe, and based in part on a talk he delivered at B-Sides London, Millard also details:
- Top metrics and key performance indicators - KPIs - that matter to the business;
- Techniques for communicating metrics to senior executives and boards of directors;
- The need for "infographic security";
- The requirement to track metrics so as to know what to improve.
Millard is the EMEA technical director for Tenable Network Security, which develops the Nessus vulnerability scanner. Millard's previous positions include roles at Tripwire, Computerlinks and Dual Technology.
