Responding to State-Sponsored Attacks

John Gordineer of Dell SonicWALL on Mitigating Threats

State-sponsored attacks are up significantly, so organizations need to rely on new, stronger controls to ward off advanced threats. John Gordineer of Dell SonicWALL discusses the role of next-generation firewalls.

The big concern about state-sponsored attacks is they are targeted, Gordineer says.

"Using a combination of social engineering and very sophisticated hacking tools, they'll target an individual, and they'll persistently go after that person until they can find a way to get a crowbar into the door of the organization," Gordineer says. Then the goal becomes exfiltration of sensitive data - often for competitive purposes.

In an interview with Information Security Media Group at the href='http://www.inforisktoday.com/gartner-summit'Gartner Security & Risk Management Summit 2013, Gordineer discusses:

Gordineer is the director of product marketing for Dell SonicWALL security products. He has more than 20 years of experience in product management, new product development and manufacturing engineering at Verilink, SonicWALL and now Dell.
