A Holistic Approach to Security

Bob Hansmann of Websense on Why We Need a New Strategy
Bob Hansmann, Websense

No single security solution is enough to defend against today's multifaceted exploits. So it's time for a new holistic and cooperative approach to information security, says Bob Hansmann of Websense.

"The real challenge we have is that we're no longer looking at just a single piece of malware - 'how do you block it?'" says Hansmann, director of product marketing at the security solutions vendor. Today's exploits are too deeply rooted in multiple systems, and they are adept at evasion. No one technology solution is sufficient for detection and prevention.

"If the threats are that complicated and connected ... shouldn't our defenses be that way?"

In short, Hansmann is calling for a holistic approach to security, which requires a new level of "coopetition" among security vendors. "There are a lot of [companies] out there that have a lot of [threat] intelligence," he says. "They just don't share it with everybody."

But sharing threat intelligence is just the proverbial tip of the iceberg, Hansmann says. "Our job is to go below the surface, find out what else is lingering and connect it to that thing they discovered."

In an interview recorded at the Black Hat USA event in Las Vegas, Hansmann discusses:

  • How to take a holistic approach to security;
  • How coopetition can work;
  • The challenge of analyzing big data for anomalous activity.

Hansmann is the director of product marketing at Websense. During his 30-year security career, he has been responsible for monitoring the trends and directions of malware, advanced threats and the security industry, as well as the utility and risks of adopting emerging technologies and services.
