The Global View of DDoS
Neustar's Susan Warner on What to Draw from Latest TrendsDDoS strikes on financial institutions are mainly intended to distract, Warner says. But across other industries, disruption is the goal.
"For a lot of the everyday DDoS that is happening, it really is disruption," Warner says. "They're trying to take down your site, they're trying to wreak a little havoc within your IT organization ... rather than try to get in the back door and grab some information."
Nearly 50 percent of Neustar's DDoS mitigation customers are located outside the U.S., so Warner has a good view of DDoS activity around the globe. While the banks get the big attention in the U.S., DDoS attacks elsewhere are distributed across many sectors.
"E-commerce companies, hosting sites, ISPs, financial institutions are targets regardless of where they're located," Warner says.
In an interview with Information Security Media Group at the Gartner Security & Risk Management Summit 2013, Warner discusses:
- The evolving size of DDoS attacks;
- DDoS trends globally;
- DDoS preparation lessons learned from recent bank attacks.
Warner is DDoS product marketing manager for Neustar Inc., which provides real-time information and analysis to the Internet, telecommunications, information services, financial services, retail, media and advertising sectors. She has more than 20 years of experience in all types of high-tech environments.
